Smith, Alice Ravenel Huger; Watercolor Painting, signed, Evening.

A watercolor on paper, framed, by Alice Ravenel Huger Smith, (American, 1876 to 1958), "Evening", signed lower right "Alice R.H.Smith".

But yesterday, she attached a rider to our covenant, namely that since she has painted so much more than I have written, that I be required to write now much more than she paints. Which is fair enough."

The two kept their creative pact, and Smith continued painting until 1956. The correspondence referenced in this and subsequent notes regarding Smith is housed at the South Carolina Historical Society....[more information available via subscription]
