A rare, gilded brass snuff box, with embossed profile portrait of Thomas Jefferson; marked at the base of his shoulder "M. & P.F.", and below, at the margin of the lid, "Jefferson." Almost certainly an English box, produced by Nathaniel Marchant (1739 to 1816) and Lewis Pingo (1743 to 1833) in Birmingham, based upon the 1804 portrait of Jefferson by Saint-Memin. Probably about 1805 to 1809. A fine example, with the sides of the box decorated with martial motifs and the recumbent British lion. CONDITION: available on full record. DIMENSIONS: available on full record. PRE-SALE ESTIMATE: available on full record. PRICE REALIZED AT AUCTION: available on full record. LITERATURE: available on full record. |
