Rifle; Schweitzer (A), Flintlock, Tiger Maple, 54 Caliber.

A fine Abraham Schweitzer Kentucky Rifle. No serial number. 54 Cal smooth bore. 44.25" octagon barrel. Signed in script "A. Schweitzer" on top of the barrel. The lockplate is not marked externally. The rifle is mounted with an engraved four-piece patchbox with daisy head typical of Lancaster County guns. The opener for the patchbox is at the front of the toe plate. The curly maple stock has raised carving on the left side of the butt incised carving there and on the forearm. There is some carving around the tang of the barrel, the comb, lockplate and sideplate.

Abraham Schweitzer was recorded in Lancaster Co. in 1794 when he made 12 rifles for the US Purveyor of Public Supplies. He moved to Franklin County, PA sometime before 1804 and died there in 1831. ...[more information available via subscription]
