Rifle; Springfield, Model 1886, Experimental, 45-70 Caliber.

A Springfield Model 1886 Experimental Trapdoor Carbine, 45-70 caliber. One of only 1,000 of these scarce carbines ever made, officially referred to as "Experimental Model 1882 third type or fourth type". This carbine has a 24" round barrel, rectangular base blade front sight, a 2,000 yard Buffington style rear sight marked "XC". The breech block is marked "1873", and the lockplate is flat with "U.S. / Springfield" and an eagle in front of the hammer. The left side of the wrist has the outline of a cartouche. The single barrel band has the bent sling loop for use in a saddle scabbard and it has a corresponding sling loop on the buttstock. The buttplate is smooth steel marked "US" on the tang with a 3-piece wiping rod and broken shell extractor in the trap. SN. 340111. ...[more information available via subscription]
