Rifle; Cogswell, Model 1817 Style, Flintlock, Brass Box, 58 Caliber.

A Cogswell New York Contract Flintlock Rifle. Cal. 58. 33.5" part octagon bbl. Marked "COGSWELL / TROY" on the lockplate and "SNY" on top of the bbl. A large three lined cartouche on the left side of the stock has an unreadable first line but, "SNY / TROY" is on the other two lines. This is a heavy rifle much in the style of the 1817 US common rifle. The brass patchbox has the hinge at the top. Smith Cogswell had a contract for these rifles and an earlier contract for muskets. ...[more information available via subscription]
