A John Challis harpsichord, walnut case with brass hardware, serial number 55-168. Challis built approximately eight harpsichords a year charging $400 to $2700 in 1944 to create an instrument.

John Challis (Ypsilanti Michigan, 1908 to 1974) studied with Arnold Dolmetsch in England. He is considered the finest harpsichord maker of the 20th century.
