Document; Civil War, Ohio Squirrel Hunters Certificate, 1863.

An Ohio Squirrel Hunters certificate dated 1863, one of the earliest of these we have seen. A partially printed document presented to Thomas J. Harwood of Franklin County, Ohio and signed by Governor David Todd

Includes pair of tinted spectacles reputedly used by Harwood during the war as sniper's glasses, but given the unit history this seems unlikely.

Thomas enlisted on April 24, 1861 with Company I, 18th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, which laid telegraph line and guarded trains until discharged, never seeing action but still performing important duty....[more information available via subscription]
